Victoria and Albert MuseumJournal Article20210118
André Godard (1881-1965) was a French architect who was Director of the Iranian Archaeological Service from 1928 to 1960 and Director of the Iran Bastan Museum which he designed, from 1936 onwards. These appointments by the Iranian government encouraged significant cultural diplomacy between France and Iran. This article deals with Godard’s archives kept at the Louvre Museum, in the Department of Islamic Art, and their significance for the study of the National Museum of Iran. It also rehabilitates a remarkable figure who did much to protect and promote the cultural heritage of Iran. This article forms part of a PhD research at Paris Nanterre University on heritage awareness and on architectural creation in Iran from the end of the 19th century to the 1960s.
2783-22282120211222Quartz Usage as a Raw Material and Its Influences on the Strategy of Lithic Technology: Thibault’s Survey Assemblage at the Northern Littoral of Strait of Hormuz 1977; Collection of Iran National Museumاستفاده از کوارتز به عنوان سنگ خام و تاثیرات آن بر استراتژی فن آوری دست ساخته های سنگی: مجموعه بررسی کلود تیبو از شمال تنگه ی هرمز 1977، موزه ملی ایران132625301310.22034/jinm.2021.253013FAسپهر زارعیاداره کل میراث فرهنگی، گردشگری و صنایع دستی استان هرمزگان0000-0002-5648-0678Journal Article20210622The 1977 joint French-Iranian geological survey carried out by Thibault and Kadjar, gave rise to one of the important contributions to Paleolithic knowledge on the northern coastline of the Persian Gulf and the Oman Sea in the pre-revolutionary years. During this survey, a remarkable lithic collection composed of 160 artifacts with cores, pebble tools, flakes, and flake-tools was collected above a sequence of successive pediment surfaces, but unfortunately, the final report of Paleolithic finds was never published. The lithic collections kept at the Paleolithic Department of National Museum of Iran (NMI). This paper presents the techno-typological characteristics of quartz as a raw material in this collection. The most prominent feature of this collection is the core-flake industry on quartz pebbles and cobbles. Technologically, quartz flaking has been done by direct percussion and bipolar anvil technique. One of the characteristic features of this collection is using bipolar anvil technique that results in small flakes. In addition, pebble tools and core-choppers, retouched pieces including scrapers, notches/denticulated, burins, and borers are tools made from this rock. This collection can be considered as a new insight into the technological behavior of Pleistocene hunter-gatherers in this poorly known part of the Iranian plateau. This article investigates the use of quartz as a raw material in the Pleistocene epoch in Thibault’s collection. 2783-22282120211222The technical knowledge of Early Neolithic Iranian Societies.

The systematic study of hard animal material products on large collections from the Iranian Plateau is lacking while larges series exist for iconic Early Neolithic sites of Tappeh Sang-e Chakhmaq and Tepe Abdul Hosein, stored at the National Museum of Iran. The advent of a new way of life with the domestication of plants and animals has undoubtedly introduced new transformation sequences (chaîne opératoire) in the exploitation of raw material, namely bone and shells.
We present here case studies, on osseous materials from these two sites, and highlight the technological characterisation of the Early Neolithic industries based on the exploitation of animal resources, wild and domestic.
Some technical peculiarities of the Early Neolithic industries are illustrated (debitage schemes by bipartitioning and fracturation) that indicate adaptability of techniques to the morphological features of raw material blocks for the production of certain tool classes (awls, smoothers, intermediate objects etc.). These preliminary results are important to establish the state of technical knowledge of prehistoric communities of Iran and to initiate a debate on the technological evolution for the hard animal mater (bone and shell) during the Early Holocene of the Iranian Plateau.
2783-22282120211222The Mahidasht Survey Project (1975-78) Revisited: Initial report of new collaborative efforts to catalogue and publish legacy data at the National Museum of Iranبازبینی پروژه بررسی ماهیدشت (1354-1357) گزارش اولیه همکاریهای مشترک برای فهرست نویسی و انتشار داده های موجود در موزه ملی ایران435825291210.22034/jinm.2022.252912FAاستیو رنتKillam Postdoctoral Research Fellow 2020-22, The University of British Columbia0000-0002-0563-9829ام البنین غفوریNational Museum of Iran

Tehran, IranJournal Article20210305ب
Building on the success of the Godin Tepe project in the Kangavar plain, L.D. Levine of the Royal Ontario Museum initiated a survey project in 1975 in the Mahidasht region, consisting of four contiguous plains around the city of Kermanshah. These plains were naturally connected with the Kangavar region via the Great Khorasan Road and formed the western part of this route in the central Zagros Mountains. The Mahidasht Survey Project conducted two full seasons of survey in 1975 and 1978, documenting 944 archaeological sites in ca. 40% of the region, spanning the complete history of human occupation from the late Paleolithic to recent history. As such, this project collected the largest, most detailed archaeological dataset in the Zagros Mountains with the goal to reconstruct the long durée development of its peoples and polities.
Following the Revolution in 1978-79, the fieldwork project came to an end, leaving the data unpublished. While the field documentation was brought to the Royal Ontario Museum in Toronto, the archaeological material remained stored at the National Museum of Iran in Tehran. Now, 40 years later, digital technology provides the tools necessary to process this large dataset and to virtually reconnect the archaeological material with the field records. This paper serves as an initial report on a new initiative at the National Museum of Iran to catalogue the Mahidasht archaeological materials in order to allow for comprehensive studies of this important dataset in conjunction with field records from the archive at the Royal Ontario Museum in Toronto.
2783-22282120211222Foliate lithic points from the Bronze Age of NE Iran, A techno-typological analysisتحلیل فنی ـ گونه شناسی تیزه های سنگی برگی شکل دوره مفرغ از شمال شرق ایران596625290910.22034/jinm.2022.252909FAیودیت تومالسکیGerman Archaeological Institute, Tehran BranchJournal Article20210128Abstract
This paper is focused on the typo-chronological determination of the bifacial projectile points from TappeHissar (Damghan, Semnan Province) and Maylan (Anshan, Fars Province). The inventories of projectiles are firstly described and published, and set into a comprehensive picture of occurrences and distribution of projectile points in Iran from the late 4th millennium to early 2nd millennium BCE. The determination of distinctive technological attributes that distinguish different methods of manufacture – respectively the general chaîneopératoire) indicate at least two major waves of technological innovation in lithic projectile points. , the current evidence of foliate bifacials in Iran demonstrates a limited technological adoption of projectiles and javelins (or daggers) that was highly possible transferred from the Upper Euphrates region and SE-Anatolia. At least two temporal sequences of technological transfer can be reconstructed: firstly the occurrence of the foliate bifacials including their complete new chaîne opératoire (thus to translate as an superior innovation in projectile points); and secondly, the distribution of the short-tanged and winged points type “Lidar/Tepecik”, apparently at the transition from the 3rd to the 2nd millennium, where we can found them already associated with comparable types in copper.

2783-22282120211222Technical Studies on Two Copper-Based Objects from the Bronze Age of Iranمطالعات فنی دو شی آلیاژ مس متعلق به عصر مفرغ ایران677425291610.22034/jinm.2021.252916FAامید عودباشیگروه مرمت اشیاء فرهنگی و تاریخی، دانشگاه هنر اصفهانماتیاس میوفرموسسه علوم باستان شناسی وین، دانشگاه وینسپهر بهادریگروه مرمت اشیاء فرهنگی و تاریخی، دانشگاه هنر اصفهانجواد طیاریگروه مرمت اشیاء فرهنگی و تاریخی، دانشگاه هنر اصفهانJournal Article20210217A multianalytical study was undertaken on two copper-based objects from northern Iran that are dated to the Late Chalcolithic and Bronze Age including an arm ring from Tappeh Hissar and a dagger from Tureng Tepe. The study was performed by using chemical and microscopic methods including inductively coupled plasma-optical emission spectroscopy (ICP-OES), scanning electron microscopy-energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (SEM-EDS) and optical microscopy (metallography). The results showed that the dagger has been made of tin bronze alloy while the arm ring is made of impure copper with a low amount of arsenic. Both objects are shaped and manufactured by cycles of cold-working and annealing although it has not been enough in the arm ring to remove all coring occurred during the casting. This is recognizable by the fact that super-imposed microstructure in the form of partially parallel banded “ghost” microstructure is visible in the etched cross section of this object. The non-metallic inclusions are scattered in the microstructure of the objects. They can be identified as sulphidic copper inclusions in the dagger and oxidic copper inclusions in the arm ring. This shows the use of different copper ores to produce these objects. Consequently, it can be assumed that two objects were manufactured and produced by two different processes even though both were common production and working techniques during the Late Chalcolithic and Bronze Age on the Iranian Plateau. Journal Article20220720From an archaeological perspective, the Araxes river basin is still one of the lesser known areas, either its northern or southern sides. This especially if those objects do not come from reliable archaeological contexts or from those which, nonetheless, for various reasons have not been sufficiently documented.
An important concept in archaeology and one that is not given a lot of public attention until things go awry, is that of the “context”. Contexts to an archaeologist, mean the place where an artifact is found. Not just the place, but the soil, the site type, the layer the artifact came from, and what else was in that layer. The importance of where an artifact is found is ample. A site, properly excavated, tells you about the people who lived there, what they ate, what they believed, and how they organized their social setting. The whole of our human past, particularly prehistoric, but historic periods too, is tied up in the archaeological remnants, and it is only by considering the whole entirety of an archaeological site that we can even begin to understand what our ancestors were about. Take an artifact out of its context and you reduce that artifact to no more than pretty. The information about its maker is gone.
2783-22282120211222A Plated Seleucid-type Coin in National Museum of Iranسکه سلوکی با روکش نقره در موزه ملی ایران16917625302010.22034/jinm.2021.253020FAزهرا علی نژادپژوهشگر آزاد0000-0003-3170-7028Journal Article20201128Abstract
During the study of the Seleucid coins of the National Museum of Iran, a plated drachm of Seleucus I showing a trophy with Aramaic letters was discovered. The starting point is the bronze head of a Hellenistic ruler, already badly damaged and deformed in antiquity, whose former facial features are reconstructed with innovative 3D technology. The portrait is identified here as a king of the early Kamnaskirid dynasty and dated around 140 BC. Further fragments of the same statue enable the reconstruction of the entire figure, whose pose followed the most common format of Hellenistic royal figures. This ‘Hellenistic Ruler’ is now the first larger-than-life representation of a Hellenistic king known for the regions of Iran and further east. A second focus is comparative studies of casting technique and alloy of the further bronze statues of the find complex. They reveal that the stylistic division of the Kal-e Chendar bronzes into a ‘Greek’ and an ‘un-Greek’ group of sculptures is carried through to technical differences, indicating a significant change in the production of bronze sculptures from late Hellenistic to the Parthian period.
Overall, the studies presented here show the potential of research on the hitherto neglected cache of sculptures from Kal-e Chendar, a potential that will be fully exploited in a project begun in spring 2021.
2783-22282120211222*Sadārap [Sadāraf/b] of *P/Frēnag”, Ardaxšēr ī Papagān’s brother or his son, Another inscription of *Sadārap [Sadāraf] on Silver Plate in

Also, in the National Museum of Iran (NMI), there is a silver vessel on which a similar inscription has been written, it is a rare accident. This inscription, with a slight difference, introduced Sadārap as son of Ardaxšēr ī Papagān’s in this inscription, with a slight difference. In other sources, such as the inscription of Šāpuhr on Ka’ba of Zardušt (ŠKZ) the name of Abrēnag king of Sadārap is mentioned in the list of Ardaxšēr’s courtiers, although his relation with Ardaxšēr is unspecified. Both vessels are authentic.

2783-22282120211222Carbon Dating of Seven Parchment Qurʾān Manuscripts and One Syriac Bible of the National Museum of Iranنتایج سالیابی کربن 14 بر روی هفت پوست نوشت قرآنی و یک پوست نوشت انجیل سریانی در موزه ملی ایران20522625301410.22034/jinm.2022.553481.1055FAسید علی آقاییپژوهشگر و مدرس، موسسه الهیات اسلامی، دانشگاه پادربورن0000-0002-1287-8721میشائیل یوزف مارکسمدیر مرکز پژوهشی کرپوس کرانیکوم، فرهنگستان علوم برلین - برندنبورگJournal Article20220509This paper presents the carbon dating results of seven Qurʾān manuscripts and one Syriac Bible (Peshitta) of the National Museum of Iran (NMI) in the context of palaeography of early Qurʾān manuscripts. The carbon age measurements, for the first time obtained from a collection in the Eastern lands of Islam, include results from one manuscript in script style kūfī B, one in kūfī C, and five in kūfī D. Measurements from carbon analysis of the Qurʾāns of the National Museum confirm the relative chronology of script styles in Qurʾānic palaeography. Obtained measurements from the Qurʾāns of NMI, however, give evidence for an early dating of kūfī D script styles. For the intricate question of date, carbon dating provides essential anchor points in chronology, beneficial for a historical understanding of Qurʾāns specifically and manuscripts in general, as the carbon date results of the Syriac Bible of NMI show. Scientific dating is recommended for producing comprehensive catalogues of manuscript collections as it reveals a new perception of Qurʾānic palaeography where chronology remains unexplored.
http://jinm.irannationalmuseum.ir/article_253014_66619ccbdd9a6cff50f85c7d99394634.pdf
